The 7.62×39 round is a rimless bottlenecked intermediate cartridge of Soviet origin. The cartridge is widely used due to the worldwide proliferation of Russian SKS and AK-47 pattern rifles, as well as RPD and RPK light machine guns.
What is 7.62 x39 good for? While many people don't appreciate the effectiveness of the 7.62x39mm for hunting big game, the cartridge can excel in that role. Indeed, many hunters use the 7.62×39 for hunting deer, feral hogs, and other big game with excellent results.
7.62x39mm performs very well at ranges inside 300 yards and the moderate recoil of the cartridge facilitates rapid follow-up shots, but performance significantly drops off at longer range.
