If you’ve never heard of a micro conversion kit before (also known as an MCK) it’s time to change that.
A micro conversion kit is basically a chassis into which you insert your handgun, which will convert it (hence the name) into something more akin to a carbine-style platform.
They might not be for everyone, but they certainly offer a lot of advantages to shooters from all different backgrounds and disciplines.
Here are a few ways to tell if it might be time for you to upgrade to one.
You Feel Like Your Handgun Platform Is Limiting You
Let’s just be honest - unlike the gas-driven carbine platforms of the world, most handguns are somewhat anemic when it comes to adding shooting accessories and attachments.
Some of the better ones are made with rails over the slide or under the barrel, but for the most part, most handguns are not designed to accept attachments.
That - at least according to us - is a limiting factor. Micro conversion kits are expressly designed with a variety of attachment points and plenty of rail space so that you can customize the platform.
And, even if it were not for this, there are a ton of MCK accessories out there that make it easy to add attachments and other shooting accessories.
You’re Recoil Shy
Beyond the ability to accessorize, probably the biggest selling point of micro conversion kits is that they make it a lot easier to corral recoil.
Now, since these platforms convert the handgun and enable it to be shouldered, even hard-kicking handgun cartridges will come to heel.
Shouldering a 9mm round really takes a lot of fire out of the recoil. You’ll get a big break and be able to shoot longer (and more accurately) with less fatigue, all while still reaping the rewards of handgun shooting.
Muzzle Flip Is Adversely Affecting Your Follow Up Shot Potential
Following on the coattails of recoil, most handguns produce an appreciable amount of muzzle flip, which is a problem in its own right.
Even where recoil isn’t wearing you out, muzzle flip can be throwing your sights off target in between shots, making it hard for you to follow up effectively.
A micro conversion kit, even if you don’t pair it with any additional accessories, will add mass to the handgun and enable you to shoulder it.
Both of these things will fight back against muzzle flip, throwing your sights off target less with each shot. And, as a result, you’ll potentially be able to make faster, follow up shots.
You’re Getting Bored of Your Current Platform
For better or for worse, if you enjoy what you’re shooting, you’ll shoot it more. Following, many handgun platforms really don’t offer a lot of opportunities for upgrading or customization - at least not as much as many sporting rifles.
Since a micro conversion kit will sort of turn your handgun platform into something like a sporting rifle, you’ll have more opportunities to customize the whole rig, staving off the boredom.
You Want an Upgrade You Can Make Without a Trip to the Gunsmith
One of the best arguments of all those in favor of getting a micro conversion kit (and there are many) is that this is a considerably substantial upgrade that you can make without taking your handgun to the gunsmith.
In fact, you can make this upgrade easily and at home - but it gets better.
Not only is this something you can do at home, you can make the upgrade without tools, and it requires no modifications, permanent or temporary, to the handgun.
It sounds too good to be true but it isn’t. You basically open up the latch, insert the handgun, slide it forward, and lock it in place. That’s it.
You will have to re-zero it every time you take it out or replace it, but still, it’s as simple an upgrade as you’ll find out there.
You Like Handgun Cartridges but Prefer Carbine Handling
It’s no secret that shoulder mounted platforms handle better than handguns. But, there are some advantages of pistol-caliber cartridges. If you want to split the difference, then a micro conversion kit can be a great upgrade that won’t require any adjustments - so you can have the best of both worlds.
