Improving Handling and Accuracy with Your Glock

Improving Handling and Accuracy with Your Glock

Posted by MCS GEAR UP on Aug 22nd 2024

There are lots of ways to become a more confident shooter with your Glock handgun, and along the way you can improve handling and shrink your groups by combating muzzle flip and recoil.

Here are some top tips, ranging from basic suggestions by adopting a proper stance, to shooting lighter ammo, to transforming your handgun with a Micro Roni for your Glock.

Let’s take a closer look at each.

Be Smart About Shooting Stance

How you stand has a big impact on your handling and performance with a firearm (especially with a handgun) which in turn impacts your accuracy.

With a handgun, square with the target, then bend your knees and lean forward ever so slightly. This will lower your center of gravity and move it forward so you are better positioned to absorb recoil.

Get a (Good) Grip

Your grip on your handgun will also impact recoil absorption as well as, ultimately, accuracy. Place your shooting hand as high on the frame as possible, so that the webbing between your thumb and forefinger is right at the base of the slide plate.

Wrap your fingers fully around the gun with your shooting thumb alongside the frame at the base of the slide. Mirror this grip with your support hand, with the thumb of your support hand alongside your other thumb, at the base of the slide.

This will maximize surface area contact between your grip and the Glock, establishing better control.

Install a Heavier Guide Rod

The stock Glock guide rod is polymer, which is light, strong, and corrosion proof. A heavier guide rod, say of tungsten, is a better bet.

It will weigh down the muzzle of the gun, which will help fight muzzle flip, in turn enabling you to make faster, more accurate follow up shots.

Install a Compensator

The precursor to this is that you need to install a Glock threaded barrel that will enable you to install a compensator.

A compensator is a special muzzle device that redistributes gasses ported at the muzzle, often pushing them up at the top of the muzzle.

This helps redirect the force of recoil, pushing the muzzle down instead of up (which keeps your sights on target), and mitigating felt recoil by as much as 50%, in some cases perhaps even more, without affecting shot power.

This, paired with a heavier guide rod, will help mitigate recoil and muzzle flip, enabling more confident, faster, more accurate follow-up shots.

Install a Red Dot Sight

Many new shooters struggle to learn to shoot proficiently over iron sights, and to be fair, with a handgun the chips are stacked against them.

This is because handguns have a short sight radius, that is, the distance between the front and rear sights. A very small error in alignment can result in big errors downrange.

It also means that lining up the sights accurately, precisely, on a single plane, is critical to hitting what you’re aiming at.

A red dot sight flips that paradigm right over. With a red dot sight, you simply calibrate the sight according to the point of impact, then float the dot over whatever you’re aiming at, and pull the trigger.

A red dot sight can allow for much more efficient, more accurate reflexive shooting, at both close and intermediate ranges.

Drill More

Spending more time at the range is also critical to becoming a more confident, more proficient shooter capable of accurate shot placement.

Drilling can help handling, reflexivity, and can instill good muscle memory and habits while fighting against bad habits like flinching.

All in all, it’s the most important tidbit in this article - if you do nothing else, spend more time at the range and drill more.

Shoot Lighter Loads

While this suggestion won’t necessarily help you directly with accuracy, it will mitigate recoil and muzzle flip, and that in turn can help.

Basically, the next time you buy ammo, look at the box for a figure called “muzzle energy.” The lower the muzzle energy is, the less felt recoil the load will produce (all else being equal).

Consider a Micro Roni for Your Glock Pistol

Last but not least, if you’re looking for a substantial transformation to the shooting experience, consider a Micro Roni for your Glock handgun.

These are basically lightweight chassis that convert your handgun into something more akin to a carbine. They are designed to be fired from the shoulder, offer additional control over the platform, and can be endlessly expanded with micro conversion kit accessories.

Equipped with a Micro Roni for your Glock handgun, you’ll be better able to control recoil, exert greater control over the handgun, and in most cases will be able to improve accuracy even at intermediate ranges.
