Know All About Muzzle Brakes

Sep 24th 2020

AR-15 was invented in the late 1950s and over time it emerged as the most popular firearm worldwide. The complicated yet fully functional firearm makes use of several parts, such as stocks, trigger groups, bolt carriers, foregrips, etc. However, there’s a lot more that can be added to the AR-15, as per the way you plan to customize it. And depending on how you intend to use the firearm, you may want to consider adding some muzzle devices, a muzzle brake. But what is a muzzle brake?

One such muzzle device is used is the muzzle brake which is also called the recoil compensator. The key purpose of Muzzle Brakes is to minimize barrel rise by diverting gases leaving the barrel, behind the projectile. This purpose is two folds. The first is to minimize felt recoil and rise, while the second one is to return the sight faster called “shot recovery” that allows quicker follow up shots.

Originally, muzzle brakes were used for artillery purposes. These are there are almost all anti-tank guns because of the reduced recoil stroke area. Today, many rifle shooters use muzzle brakes for competition shooting.

How Muzzle Brakes Work?
AR-15 rifles have the buffer and spring assembly that help reduce the recoil in the torso and shoulder. However, reducing the recoil using a muzzle brake helps keep the gun’s barrel steady. By redirecting the gases that follow the bullet of the gun, the recoil amount can be significantly reduced with a muzzle brake.

The gas will both push forward on the brake and also vent out of the sides that in turn will help reduce the upward climb of the muzzle along with the recoil.

Maximum muzzle brakes vent to the sides and thus, not interfering in the shooter’s ability to see during rapid fire. Muzzle brakes are a must-have for those shooters who participate in competition shooting and need to utilize rapid fire.

Advantages of Using Muzzle Brakes
It is a must-have for those who can’t handle the power of their rifles. This way, they can significantly reduce the amount of recoil and make it more manageable to shoot.

A muzzle brake helps the hunter shoot successive rounds faster and prevents dirt and dust from kicking up.

Police and military officials often use compensators and muzzle brakes to flash suppression so that they don’t give their position away as easily.

Popular AR15 Muzzle Brakes

VG6 PRECISION EPSILON 556 MUZZLE BRAKE
This muzzle brake is ideal for police and military purposes. It is also suitable for use in competition shooting. It usually comes in a black nitride coating or the stainless steel bead-blasted version.

Lantac Dragon Muzzle Brake 5.56/.223
This muzzle brake can assist with stabilizing a fully automatic firearm. The design of this muzzle brake is meant to vent gases quickly to reduce muzzle flash.

Some other much in demand muzzle brakes options are Fortis Muzzle Brake 5.56, Battle Arms Development Thumper, and Precision Armament M4-72.
