You can build a carbine if you want a light rifle platform that handles well in tight spaces. Or you can really jump to the end and build an ARP if you want the ultimate in concealment and handling in close quarters.
But carbines are heavy and cumbersome compared to ARPs, and ARPs are difficult to handle and inaccurate compared to carbines.
Surely there must be some better option somewhere in the middle ground?
There is, and it’s an SBR. Here are some of the best reasons to start your next build with an AR15 short barrel upper if you’re looking for something light, easy to conceal and transport, and which still will offer good performance in tight spaces.
Concealability
One of the main advantages of an AR15 short barrel upper is that the finished build will yield an SBR that will be easy to conceal.
Granted, you won’t be able to conceal it as effectively as an ARP (it’s not a handgun, after all) but it’ll be far better than a carbine and even that much better than a full sized rifle.
All in all, SBRs balance concealability perfectly with the other attributes they offer.
Maneuverability and Handling in Tight Spaces
The truth is SBRs really take the crown here. They handle far better than ARPs, all else being equal, while remaining superior to carbines and full sized rifles.
They are lighter and more compact than the two latter examples, so that part should be self explanatory.
But with respect to ARPs, while they are not as small and light, we can’t lose sight of the fact that ARPs are hard to handle because they are cumbersome and difficult to control, not just because of recoil but because they are intended to be wielded with one hand.
SBRs, which still give you the flexibility to shoulder the platform, offer much greater stability and handling even in tight spaces, even though they are not quite as compact as ARPs.
Less Barrel Whip
It’s often said that a shorter barrel is less accurate, but this is an incomplete rendering of the bigger picture.
Platforms with shorter barrels are easier to shoot more accurately because they have a shorter sight radius. This makes it harder for the operator to be accurate, but it is not necessarily a reflection of the ballistic capabilities of the platform in question.
Conversely, the more forgiving and longer sight radius of platforms with longer barrels means it is easier for most shooters to shoot them more accurately, especially at greater ranges.
But with a longer barrel also comes more vibration, which can incur a phenomenon known as barrel whip which causes some aberrations in accuracy, especially at longer ranges where inconsistencies get amplified.
The shorter the barrel, the stiffer the barrel, which actually means that an AR15 short barrel upper has the advantage here with respect to accuracy.
Better Control Than an ARP
You can love ARPs because they offer you rifle firepower in a handgun-sized format, but the truth is that they handle appallingly.
They are lightweight and difficult to control, especially with one hand, which makes it a bear to control recoil.
The flexibility to shoulder an SBR gives you a much greater ability to control the platform as well as to corral recoil, giving them much better handling overall.
Smaller and Lighter Than a Rifle or Carbine
While an SBR will prove easier to handle than an ARP, and more accurate, it is also the case that it will still maintain the edge of carbines and rifles because it offers you the ability to shoulder and fire the weapon while remaining lightweight, more maneuverable, and easier to conceal and transport. So you get a win-win situation where the SBR has a combination of advantages that neither an ARP, carbine, or full sized rifle can offer.
